Knob with backplate

Central Europe, early 18th century

Malleable iron. Wrought and pierced backplate with an embossed, grooved centre and a pierced opening for the pull knob. The square bar knob is forged into a cone terminating in an incised rosette.

In the Baroque period it was popular to use oval handles (olives) and knobs with backplates (rosettes) as door pulls. The handles and knobs were symmetrically mounted to double doors and the wrought backplates were often tin-plated or gilt.
